Canheri caves is a must visiting place in Mumbai. Canheri caves are rock cut monuments situated in the forest of Sanjay Gandhi national park. One hundred and nine caves spread in this area. Some caves are very small and some of very big. Most of the caves are Buddhist viharas . And each cave have different uses. Buddhist viharas are used as the shelter of monks commonly open court surrounded by open cells. Some caves are chaityas its a big hall build for discussion and inside of chaityas we can see stupas . Most caves are containing buddhist sculptures, relief carving, painting and inscription. caves are connected with rock cut steps. Work of these caves started in first century and completed in 10th century.
